Update to the update
Umm, so I don’t think I was very clear “last week”:http://www.rklau.com/tins/archives/2007/10/26/administrivia-update-my-shared-items-feed.php. The feed updates are for the “shared items” feed, not for the blog feed itself. In other words: if you weren’t subscribed to my “shared items” feed before, the post didn’t/doesn’t apply to you (and sorry for the rambling). If you were subscribed to [...]
Administrivia - update my shared items feed
I’ve been using Google Reader’s shared items for a while now, and originally ran the resulting feed through FeedBurner. Truth be told, I don’t need the metrics (it’s mildly interesting that there are three dozen people subscribed to my shared items feed, I suppose). More importantly, some useful context with respect to the items is [...]
Feeds in search results?
A good discussion is going on at “Joost de Valk’s blog”:http://www.joostdevalk.nl/feeds-in-the-search-results/ about situations in which feeds do/don’t show up in search results. (Short answer: they shouldn’t.) I provide some clarifications about what we do at Google insofar as feeds and search behaviors are concerned, and answer a few questions that (hopefully) clears up some misconceptions [...]
The future of distributed media
Had a great conversation with “Barry Parr”:http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/parr/ today, and one of the observations I shared was how much fun I’m having with Google Reader’s “share” function. For those that don’t know, Google Reader has a feature that lets you “share” any item in the reader. (See image to the right.)
I take the feed that Google [...]
Full vs. Partial Feeds
I just wrote up “a post”:http://blogs.feedburner.com/feedburner/archives/2007/04/ricks_ruminations_full_feeds.php I’m pretty proud of over at “Burning Questions”:http://blogs.feedburner.com/feedburner/. It’s specifically about the full vs. partial feed debate, but from a different perspective than most discussions on the topic. Specifically, I looked at the likelihood of partial feeds generating clickthroughs (low), the ability to increase clickthroughs by adding FeedFlare, and, [...]
Shared items
The pace continues to accelerate here in FeedBurner-land, so I’ve been pretty slack in posting to the blog. I know, I know - you didn’t miss me! - but it still feels odd to be out of the habit of posting and then face the inevitable writer’s block when I sit down to post.
But there’s [...]
How engaged is your audience?
Really excited with the latest post we put up today at the company blog: “FeedBurner’s View of the Feed Market”:http://blogs.feedburner.com/feedburner/archives/2007/02/feedburners_view_of_the_feed_m.php. The gist of the post is this: for all the attention focused on subscriber numbers, they’re an incomplete metric to use when evaluating a feed’s audience. What good are a million subscribers if they never [...]
Prediction for the day: subscription numbers will rise
OK, this isn’t exactly a bold prediction: as we “noted”:http://blogs.feedburner.com/feedburner/archives/2007/02/the_google_effect.php on our company blog, Google is “now reporting subcsriber numbers”:http://googlereader.blogspot.com/2007/02/one-subscriber-two-subscribers-three.html to feed publishers. What this means is that starting tomorrow morning, if you use FeedBurner you’ll see your subscriber number grow because we’ll be able to tell you how many Google Reader (or Personalized Hompage) [...]
Google Reader feature request
I really enjoy using Google Reader as my online feed reader. But I just realized I wanted to do something that isn’t currently supported. Not sure whether this needs to be baked into the Google Reader code, or is doable via a Greasemonkey script: I want to be able to expand a feed (or a [...]
The big day is upon us
Just got back to my desk from the Innovation Awards, and look what was waiting on my desktop:
That’s right, IE7 just downloaded automatically via Automatic Update.
Now the fun begins!
