When did Halloween become a week-long celebration?

By my count, my kids have been dressed up at four events so far, and Halloween is still a day away. I hate to start sounding like “Grumpy Old Man”:http://www.danacarvey.net/snl_grumpy_losealimb.wav, but geez. This is nuts.

Nine years

On this day in 1997, I married Robin. It was an incredible day — unseasonably warm in Alexandria, VA (where she grew up), and we were fortunate to have so many friends and family around to help us celebrate. The reception had its share of mishaps: the wedding cake fell over (bumped by an over-zealous [...]

Kid-proofing a PC

I recently bought Robin a laptop, which meant that her 3+ year-old PC is now freed up to do the thankless job of being the kids’ computer. It’s running WinXP home, and has a wifi connection to the home network, and before I let the kids run loose on the thing, I’d love to hear [...]

Back from vacation

Vacation ended a week ago and it already feels like a year ago. Funny how that works.
No doubt the most exciting (in a you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me way) part of the vacation was a 4am call from “ADT”:http://www.adt.com/ telling us our house was on fire. Yep, those are great calls to get. In what can only be termed [...]

Vacation starts tomorrow

And, if I want my family to talk to me, that means that posting will be light. Enjoy yourselves.

Cowboy Junkies at Morton Arboretum

Meant to mention this over the weekend — we had a wonderful night at the Morton Arboretum watching the “Cowboy Junkies”:http://www.cowboyjunkies.com/ perform (their only performance all summer, as they’re currently in the studio recording a new album). The Junkies are particularly meaningful for Robin and me, as we played “The Anniversary Song” as our last [...]

Strangest kids book ever

Reading “Babar and the Succotash Bird”:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007DB95A/tins-20 to my kids tonight, I ran across the following paragraph. You may not agree, but it strikes me as among the oddest ever committed to the English language:
“Remember, Alexander, don’t jump to conclusions. There’s more than one bird who can call ‘Succotash!’ That’s how life is - right mixed [...]

Signs You’re at a Different Stage of Life

I spent the better part of an hour inflating a swimming pool so that the boys could cool off today (in 90 degree heat, inflating that pool was a ton o’ fun), and separately got to employ the time-tested smell check to see if Becca’s diaper was full. Ernie, on the other hand, is busy [...]

Family doctor visit

We took the boys to the pediatrician last night for their annual check-ups. Each needed a blood test to check iron levels, and Robby needed a couple shots (he just turned 4). Robin mentioned in passing to the pediatrician when he came in that she’d be back tomorrow morning with Becca for Becca’s six month [...]

JotSpot Family site errors

This is annoying. After posting on Sunday about the JotSpot family site, I signed up to give it a test drive. I started playing with the family tree a bit, adding in a few generations and linking people up. The UI was pretty straightforward, adding people was easy, and all was good.
Then this:
