Naperville profiled on Colbert Report

Sort of, anyway. In his “Hometown Hero Town” spot, Stephen glowingly reviewed Naperville for a recent “news story”:http://www.dailyherald.com/story.asp?id=309705 that profiled a tow truck service to tow you and your car home if you’re drunk. As Stephen noted, the cost is $85, but it’s $65 if you have a reservation. “Finally, folks, you can schedule your [...]

Darth Vader on line 2

Sean showed this to me yesterday, and it’s still cracking me up:

Flagpole Sitta

This may be the best recruiting video ever made. Tell me you wouldn’t kill to work here (btw, it’s “Connected Ventures”:http://www.connectedventures.com/ if you’re wondering) after watching this:

Subscribe to SEL or the Dog Gets it

After seeing Danny’s “post”:http://searchengineland.com/070427-191530.php about getting to 50,000 subscribers, I just couldn’t resist this version of his big feed icon:

(With apologies to National Lampoon.)

My new measurement of time in L.A.

From now on, whenever I’m driving in L.A., I’m going to measure the elapsed time in ‘episodes’. As in episodes of 24.
Example: “Wow, the last time I had to go from Geffen’s offices in Santa Monica to Burbank, it took me two and a half episodes.”

CIA security concerns

Searched for something online yesterday, and the result included a link to the CIA world fact book, which apparently is hosted at cia.gov (not www.cia.gov). However, the CIA’s security certificate is for www.cia.gov, causing Firefox to wonder whether “someone may be trying to intercept your communications with this web site.”

Funny.

Signs of the apocalypse

If you have the stomach for it, this “22 minute recording”:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp0HyxQv97Q&eurl= of a phone call with Verizon Wireless customer service is just staggering. Throughout the entire experience, noone — not supervisors, not account reps, not even the supervisor’s supervisor — are capable of recognizing that .002 dollars is different than .002 cents. That this guy [...]

Quote of the year

Robin and I took the better part of the last couple days to do some long-overdue cleaning around the house. At one point this afternoon, the boys’ bathroom was cleared out so I could scrub the floors and the sinks; our bathroom was in a similar state. Our bedroom, however, was mostly done, and the [...]

Emerging from Sugar Coma, Enjoying Long Or Short

Long or Short Capital is evaluating the burgeoning “candy exchange market”:http://longorshortcapital.com/candy-asset-exchange-rates.htm, thinking about standardizing on the candy corn as the “unit of candy reserve currency”:http://longorshortcapital.com/could-candy-corn-become-the-reserve-currency.htm, and traders are shocked that the peanut isn’t “contributing to a rise in peanut M&M values”:http://longorshortcapital.com/candy-asset-exchange-rates.htm#comment-2559.
This is almost as good as the excess candy I brought in this morning.
(And yes, [...]

The Tim Calhoun Effect

This is pretty funny. Four years ago, the Will Forte character Tim Calhoun made an appearance on Saturday Night Live, and I “wrote about”:http://www.rklau.com/tins/archives/2002/10/21/tim_calhoun_for_senate.php some of my favorite lines. (If you haven’t seen it, Tim Calhoun is a Senate candidate whose public speaking skills are atrocious. It’s well-written, and Forte is tremendous.)
Well, wouldn’t you know [...]
