Amtrak service update - 10:45am
We’re pulling into Wilmington, Delaware about 2 and a half hours behind schedule. Conductor just walked the car and told us that power’s restored as far as Philadelphia, not yet north of Philadelphia.
Government’s role in the rail system
Susie over at Suburban Guerilla “thinks”:http://susiemadrak.com/2006/05/25/09/25/northeast-train-corridor-attacked/ that this is a good example of the government underfunding Amtrak and took advantage of a captive audience in Philadelphia to evangelize a change in control in November.
Yes, President Bush tried to zero out government subsidies for Amtrak last year. At the time, I blogged about Senator Obama’s support [...]
Amtrak’s completely shut down
We haven’t moved in 90 minutes, the last conductor update was that they were trying to get a diesel to pull us into Wilmington. No word on what will happen after that. Meanwhile, Chris Casey reports in my comments that we’re a top developing story on CNN, and we’re a front page story at CNN.com [...]
Snakes on a train
WCBS reports that “all service between Boston and DC is suspended”:http://wcbstv.com/topstories/local_story_145084817.html. Groovy.
Amtrak update
OK, I have to give the Acela conductor credit. He’s hopping on the intercom periodically to give us updates. Five minutes ago: “We haven’t heard anything new, we keep calling but we have no further info on the ETA on a fix for this situation. In the meantime, if anyone can sing, please come to [...]
Verizon broadband update
Was stuck in traffic yesterday en route to Baltimore for a family event (no, I was not driving!) and was able to stay online for 2 full hours. No interruptions in service… while the speed wasn’t super zippy, it was absolutely perfect for email, IM and casual browsing. What would’ve been a huge hole in [...]
The Golden what?
Me to parking attendant, downtown San Francisco: “What’s the best way to get back to the 101 towards the Golden Gate?”
Parking attendant: “The what?”
Me: “The Golden Gate Bridge.”
Parking attendant: “That in San Francisco?”
Me: “You’re kidding.”
Parking attendant to co-worker: “Jose! You know where the Golden Gate Bridge is?”
Me: “You’re kidding.”
Parking attendant: “Sorry, maybe try Embarcardero?”
I want [...]
Crazy busy
Just got back from a crazy couple of days in Los Angeles. Scary stat of the day? I flew four hours from L.A. to Chicago tonight, and the air temp dropped 80 degrees. Whoa.
Last night started out strong — I got to have dinner with a former co-worker, John Lipsey, who just bought a place [...]
I Want Seth Stevenson’s expense account
Seth Stevenson, whose Ad Report Card is a consistently great discussion of good and bad advertising, just wrapped up a week in Amsterdam. And “wrote about it”:http://www.slate.com/id/2124561/entry/2124562/.
I want his expense account.
Shaun Jackson Back Office
I placed my order for a Shaun Jackson Back Office laptop backpack last night, it should be here sometime next week. I’ve grown very tired of schlepping my briefcase — and a backpack seemed a good answer. “Buzz”:http://buzzmodo.typepad.com recommended the “Eddie Bauer”:http://www.business2.com/b2/web/photoessay/0,21937,1038411-1,00.html backpack, but finding one was going to require a bit of hunting. And [...]
